Forty-five non-athlete older men and women (mean age 68.1 ± 7.2 years) were randomly assigned to three groups: RT with creatine supplementation (RT + CS), RT with placebo (RT + P), and a control group. The RT protocol involved three sessions per week for 10 weeks. The RT + CS group received 0.1 g/kg body weight of creatine daily, while the RT + P group received an equivalent amount of starch. Fasting blood samples were collected before and after the 10-week intervention to measure oxidative stress markers. Muscle strength and quality of life were also assessed.
What they found
After 10 weeks, both training groups (RT + CS and RT + P) showed a significant decrease in MDA and 8-OHDG, and a significant increase in GPX and TAC (p = 0.001 for all). Creatinine levels increased in the RT + CS group (p = 0.014). Quality of life and muscle strength improved in both experimental groups (p = 0.001), with muscle strength changes being more pronounced in the RT + CS group compared to the RT + P group (p < 0.05).
What it means
Regular resistance training is a suitable non-pharmacological method to enhance the antioxidant system, muscle strength, and quality of life in older adults. While the role of creatine on the antioxidant system and quality of life in older adults is not definitively established, creatine supplementation alongside RT can significantly increase muscle strength gains.
