Some studies show an independent relationship between short-term blood pressure variability and cardiovascular outcome. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring is a better predictor of maternal and fetal complications in gestational hypertension than office measurement. Ambulatory pulse pressure is a strong predictor of cardiovascular outcome, and the QKD interval correlates with left ventricular mass. Self-measurement of blood pressure is effective in identifying the white-coat effect under standardized conditions.

White-coat hypertension is defined as conventional blood pressure persistently equal to or greater than 140/90 mmHg with an average daytime ambulatory blood pressure of below 135/85 mmHg.
