Taurine (2-aminoethanesulfonic acid) is a conditionally essential, sulfur-containing amino acid that is among the most abundant free amino acids in human tissues, concentrated in the heart, skeletal muscle, retina, brain, and immune cells. It is obtained both from the diet—chiefly shellfish, fish, and meat—and from endogenous synthesis in the liver from cysteine. Taurine is not incorporated into proteins but functions in bile-acid conjugation, osmoregulation, calcium handling, membrane stabilization, and mitochondrial activity, and it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Circulating taurine has been reported to decline with age in several species, prompting interest in its role in aging.
A landmark 2023 study reported that taurine declines with age in mice, monkeys, and humans and that supplementation extended lifespan and healthspan in animals by reducing cellular senescence, mitochondrial dysfunction, DNA damage, and inflammation—but no randomized trial has yet shown that taurine slows aging in humans, and independent 2025 analyses found that human taurine levels often stay flat or rise with age, directly challenging the deficiency premise. Meta-analyses of randomized trials do show modest cardiometabolic benefits (blood pressure, fasting glucose, triglycerides, cardiac function), a small-to-moderate improvement in endurance exercise performance, and reduced inflammatory and oxidative-stress biomarkers, though individual trials in trained athletes are mixed. Overall, human evidence is moderate for cardiometabolic and endurance effects, while anti-aging claims rest largely on animal and cell studies.
