This meta-analysis synthesized evidence from 34 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials published up to February 1, 2016, involving 2028 normotensive and hypertensive adults. Weighted mean differences of changes in blood pressure and serum magnesium were calculated using a random-effects meta-analysis.
What they found
Magnesium supplementation at a median dose of 368 mg/d for a median duration of 3 months significantly reduced systolic blood pressure by 2.00 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure by 1.78 mm Hg. These reductions were accompanied by a 0.05 mmol/L elevation of serum magnesium. A dose of 300 mg/d or duration of 1 month was found sufficient to elevate serum magnesium and reduce blood pressure, and serum magnesium was negatively associated with diastolic blood pressure.
